Attention, sophisticated lipsynchers. In a positively gushing Chico Enterprise Record profile with the enchanting headline "Music Preview: Classy Carol Channing is still a classic" Carol lets slip that she's recording an audio book of her mind-bending memoir, Just Lucky I Guess. What's that on the horizon? Another camp classic, straight from the source!
During a phone interview with Channing, who said, "Just call me Carol," she was as captivating and effervescent as in person, or on stage or screen. She assured me she had not retired, but simply had taken time off to write her autobiography, which took over four years to complete. Titled, "Just Lucky, I Guess," she is now in the process of recording it as an audio-book.
Born in Seattle and reared in San Francisco, Channing continues to have a zest for life at age 85. Nearly four years ago she married her junior high school sweetheart, Harry Kullijian, after a 70-year separation. They make their home in Modesto. "He's 86," she said. "(Marriage is) wonderful after 80. It's a true blessing."
