"We're Gonna Bring You the Power"

Oh, yeah, they brought it. The superfly 70s PBS kid comedy jam known as The Electric Company is on DVD after being away a long, long time. It reminds me of when SCTV finally came out on DVD--such a long wait for such a fun show. It's hard to describe the Electric Company with out overusing the word "funky." ("Happy News" does a good job of it.) Like Sesame Street, it was very New York, with a mostly black & Puerto Rican cast, led by Rita Moreno (who turns out to be a total crackup) and featuring pre-Fame Irene Cara, done with a positive 70s revolutionary vibe and cool music. The theme began We're gonna turn it on / We're gonna give you the power, and that ain't bullshit. And now that you're all grown up, you can watch it whenever you want to--stoned!
