Bad Things Happen -- Spy on Everyone!

Recently, a grad student was murdered after getting so shit-faced at a bar she couldn't defend herself. What to do? Well, the victim's ex bf and assemblyman Felix Ortiz think the answer is obvious:
Imette St. Guillen's slaying has inspired a proposed "Imette's Law" that could deter similar crimes by requiring bars to put video cameras at their entrances.

"It would help make a difference in situations like this," said Ryan Kocher, 22, a graduate student at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a former boyfriend of St. Guillen.

Assemblyman Felix Ortiz (D-Brooklyn) said he would sponsor Imette's Law.

We'd do better to teach our children how to drink instead of punishing the rest of us for their foolishness, if you ask me!

The camera idea is ridiculous, but people can't be taught how to drink, and nearly everyone in the world has gotten falling down drunk at least once. What I think needs to be done is to hold bars accountable for what kind of people they hire to do security. Straight bars are notorious for hiring psychos to deal with drunk, vulnerable people.

Dany is right. And one of the reasons Imette's story is so fascinating and sad is that all of us have been in her shoes, maybe even many times over, and we're only alive because the psychos in our vicinity weren't in the mood that night.
